My beliefs and practices in the childcare field are strongly informed by the concepts of free play and anti-fragility, as well as child development Children have rights and deserve the same level of respect as any human, and that includes providing opportunities for them to explore the world on their own terms, in their own time, and without unnecessary or arbitrary restrictions.
Recognizing and honoring each child’s individual developmental stage at all times, and finding developmentally appropriate ways to scaffold their learning and development, is a constant and vital process that I am dedicated to.
Competence is built through trying to do hard things, and this is as true for children as it is for adults. At Mountain Laurel PlayCare, children are provided with space and equipment to play, and the freedom to choose what that play looks like for themselves. An adult is always supervising, but not directing the play.
Kids don't learn social skills and emotional regulation through singing songs about being nice or being scolded by adults; they learn by getting into conflicts with their peers and figuring out how to resolve them. I am always on hand to help with communication as needed, but give the children the autonomy they need (and crave!) to come up with their own solutions and enact them.
We spend time outside every day (unless the weather is particularly abysmal or dangerous).
We read books every day as a group, and there is always a well-stocked bookcase for children to peruse as they desire.
We don't watch TV, movies, shows, or anything else on a screen during childcare hours (except in special circumstances, which will be discussed beforehand with parents).
